Podcast: Tarcísio’s future in Bolsonarism – Folha – 07/10/2023 – Podcasts

The tax reform vote last week represented a defeat for Jair Bolsonaro (PL) as leader of the opposition. He had been attacking the text that ended up approved by the Chamber with a wide margin. The discussion on the subject also triggered the first public crisis between the former president and the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who supported the reform and emerged victorious from the negotiations.
The misunderstanding between godfather and political godson opened up the dissatisfaction of Bolsonaristas with the governor – who was even harassed at a meeting of the PL. On Sunday (9), the governor minimized what happened and said that he will always be loyal to Bolsonaro.
At Palácio dos Bandeirantes, Tarcísio tries to reconcile nods to Bolsonarism and a pragmatic speech that includes dialogues with the Lula government (PT), but the attempt at balance has displeased the former president’s radical base. They point out that the governor has his own political project, with an eye on the 2026 presidential race after Bolsonaro’s ineligibility.
This Monday (10), Café da Manhã analyzes the political and electoral consequences of the public clash between Tarcísio and Bolsonaro and discusses the future of the opposition to the Lula government. The episode listens to Folha reporter Igor Gielow.
