PL celebrates a weak Bolsonaro, but still a mine of votes – 7/9/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

Jair Bolsonaro has been causing discomfort in the routine of the PL, which considers that he promotes unnecessary friction such as the attempt to pressure the party to vote against the tax reform. The former president, however, continues to be treated as an electoral gift by the party.

In the analysis of PL leaders, Bolsonaro is in an ideal situation for the party: politically weak, as he is ineligible – which would make him more dependent on the party –, but electorally strong. The assessment is that, as an electoral supporter, he will work as a mine of votes in the next elections.

The political defeat he had last week, when trying to defeat the Lula government (PT) in the tax reform, would have consolidated his political fragility, without depriving him, however, of his ability to mobilize the electorate.

Because of the expectation that they will be supported by the ex-president in his municipal campaigns, for example, several mayors from all over Brazil would be accepting to join the legend.

According to the accounts of the PL summit, commanded by Valdemar Costa Neto, the party will be able to elect around a thousand mayors in 2024. With this base, it will be able to take between 120 and 130 federal deputies to the Chamber in 2026 – significantly increasing its participation in the millionaire fund party that supports the legends in Brazil. The PL elected 99 parliamentarians in 2022.

Internal party polls would even show that, after a low due to the defeat to Lula and the disappearance when he traveled to the US, Bolsonaro is now regaining popularity.

The São Paulo quartet Terno Rei will release the EP “B-Sides Gêmeos” this Monday (10), almost a year after its last release.
