Podcast: Russian spies pretending to be Brazilians – 04/11/2023 – Podcasts

In less than a year, three men were accused in different countries of being Russian spies who posed as Brazilian citizens using false documents.
The most recent case is that of Gerhard Daniel Campos Wittich, who claimed to be Brazilian, the son of Austrian parents and who lived in Rio de Janeiro for five years. He founded a 3D printing company that came to serve bodies such as the Brazilian Navy and the Ministry of Culture.
The story bears similarities with that of Serguei Tcherkasov, deported from Holland to Brazil accused of trying to infiltrate the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and with that of a man arrested in Norway posing as a Brazilian researcher.
It is not yet clear if at some point these spies targeted institutions in Brazil, but the cases sparked an alert among the authorities. The Federal Police began to investigate whether the country has been systematically used by nations like Russia to train illegal spy agents.
In this Tuesday’s episode (11), Café da Manhã talks with Fábio Serapião, a reporter for Sheet in Brasilia, about how alleged Russian spies used weaknesses in the Brazilian bureaucracy to obtain documents from the country. The podcast also analyzes the repercussions that the sequence of cases can bring to Brazil.
The audio program is published on Spotify, streaming service partner of Sheet in the initiative and which specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the application, just register for free.
Breakfast is published from Monday to Friday, always at the beginning of the day. The episode is presented by journalists Gabriela Mayer and Gustavo Simon, with production by Carolina Moraes, Laila Mouallem and Victor Lacombe. Sound editing is by Thomé Granemann.
