Podcast: Lula’s veto of acts on the 60th anniversary of the coup – 03/28/2024 – Podcasts

President Lula’s (PT) directive not to organize events commemorating the 60th anniversary of the military coup in Brazil generated reactions inside and outside the government. In a recent interview with RedeTV!, the PT member said that he prefers not to dwell on 1964 because that “is part of the past” and that he wants to “move the country forward”.

With this stance, ministries canceled actions — which included apologies to victims of the dictatorship — and civil society organizations demanded the administration, calling the president’s speech wrong. Sectors of the government defended the decision: Minister José Múcio (Defense) frames the measure as an effort to pacify the military, which maintains a delicate relationship with Lula in this third term.

The president also discouraged demonstrations by the Forces celebrating the coup, like those that took place under Jair Bolsonaro (PL). In an interview with Sheet, Historian Heloisa Starling, professor at UFMG, said that the action suggests “a kind of guardianship of the military”. For her, letting 60 years of the coup go unnoticed is missing a chance to discuss the place of the Armed Forces — which could have serious consequences for democracy.
