Exactly ten years ago, on June 13, 2013, the third act against the increase in public transport fares in São Paulo ended with a change in the direction of that movement. The increase in police repression, with cases of violence against demonstrators, passers-by and journalists, would make the protests take shape in a decisive way.

After that day, groups on the streets saw different sectors join the acts, making the agenda increasingly diffuse.

Those events would turn June 2013 into a milestone in the recent history of the country. To this day, the period is the subject of debates about what motivated the demonstrations —was it just for 20 cents?— and the consequences that the acts had —in civil society organizations, in police procedures and in Brazilian institutional politics.

This Tuesday’s Café da Manhã (13) revisits the protests of ten years ago to explain how they brought together so many different people and to analyze some of their meanings. Podcasts editor Angela Boldrini and Café presenter Gabriela Mayer spoke with people who were at the demonstrations and are studying June 2013.

The episode listens to the organizers of the acts Lucas Monteiro and Mayara Vivian, who were part of the Movimento Passe Livre in 2013, the activist Pâmella Vaz, the federal deputy Kim Kataguiri (União Brasil), the political scientist Camila Rocha and the president of the Brazilian Forum of Public Security, Renato Lima.
