This Wednesday (24) marks 40 years since the end of the meeting that founded the MST (Landless Rural Workers Movement). After celebrating Lula’s (PT) third term, the group reached this milestone under pressure: it was the target of a CPI in Congress last year and went through tremors with the PT government.
Planalto was angered by the movement’s invasion of an Embrapa farm in Petrolina (PE) — later assessed as a mistake by João Pedro Stedile, a landless leader. Along with the resumption of occupations, 2023 saw conflicts in the countryside increase, after four years of hostile speech by Jair Bolsonaro (PL), who spoke of “welcoming land invaders with bullets”.
Today, the movement relies on the image linked to agroecology to structure settlements and provide perspectives for new generations. Critics say that the MST did not know how to renew itself. For them, who see unproductive properties as isolated cases, the group ignores the modernization of agribusiness.
This Wednesday’s Café da Manhã (24) tells how the MST reaches 40 years of age, discusses the relevance of the movement’s flags and analyzes what it represents in the field and in politics. The podcast listens to Eduardo Scolese, political editor at Sheet and author of the book “Pioneiros do MST”.
The audio program is published on Spotify, a streaming service partner of Sheet in the initiative and which specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the app, simply register for free.
Café da Manhã is published from Monday to Friday, always at the beginning of the day. The episode is presented by journalists Gabriela Mayer and Magê Flores, produced by Laila Mouallem and Victor Lacombe. Sound editing is by Thomé Granemann.
