Days before undergoing hip surgery, scheduled for this Friday (29), President Lula (PT) said he would not be photographed using a walker or crutches. “You will always see me looking beautiful, as if I hadn’t even had surgery,” he said.

The speech was criticized for prejudice against people with disabilities — as if only those who didn’t need assistance to walk were beautiful. In April, Lula had already apologized for saying that people with intellectual disabilities have “screw imbalance problems”. The cases led to a debate about ableism and the image that politicians seek to build for themselves.

The topic also appears in other countries and involves other prejudices. In the USA, ageism is denounced by some groups, as Republicans use Joe Biden’s age, 80, to characterize him as unfit for the Presidency — Donald Trump is 77.

Today’s Café analyzes the elements that weigh on politicians in building their public image and discusses how this process still echoes prejudices. The podcast interviews political marketing strategist Felipe Soutello. He was responsible for the campaigns of Simone Tebet (MDB) for President, in 2022, and Bruno Covas (PSDB) for São Paulo City Hall, in 2020.

The audio program is published on Spotify, a streaming service partner of Sheet in the initiative and which specializes in music, podcast and video. You can listen to the episode by clicking above. To access the app, simply register for free.

Café da Manhã is published from Monday to Friday, always at the beginning of the day. The episode is presented by journalists Gabriela Mayer and Gustavo Simon, produced by Carolina Moraes, Laila Mouallem and Victor Lacombe. Sound editing is by Thomé Granemann.
