After 3 months and 19 days, the third government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) had its first fall from minister. General Gonçalves Dias, head of the Institutional Security Office, resigned this Wednesday (19), after the release of images that called into question the body’s performance in the coup attacks of January 8.

Videos revealed by CNN Brasil show that the vandals received water from GSI agents during the depredation of the Planalto Palace and that Gonçalves Dias himself circulated around the place while the acts took place on the floor below.

Lula has an old friendship with the general, who headed security for the PT candidate in his first two terms. After his resignation, the president appointed Ricardo Cappelli, a former security officer in the Federal District, to lead the GSI on an interim basis.

Gonçalves Dias denies having facilitated the actions of the coup plotters and said in an interview with TV Globo that he made the position available for the investigation to be carried out. The Presidency’s Communications Secretariat said it seeks to hold “remaining teams” of the Jair Bolsonaro (PL) government responsible for any failures on January 8.
