Podcast addresses the Yanomami health crisis – Folha – 01/24/2023 – Podcasts

Photographs that circulated over the weekend show malnourished Yanomami indigenous people, including children with bare bones and elderly people with visible skeletons. The health crisis led the government to declare a Public Health Emergency of National Importance in the territory.

An official delegation began arriving in Roraima last week, when a team from the Ministry of Health was assigned the mission of diagnosing the situation of the Yanomami. President Lula also visited the region on Saturday (21) and announced measures to support indigenous peoples.

Warnings about the precarious situation of the Yanomami were made for years, but they did not prevent the population from abandoning. The lack of health care has led to the proliferation of diseases such as malaria, which had 11,000 cases registered last year – in a territory with around 30,000 inhabitants.

In this Tuesday’s episode (24), Café da Manhã interviews Estevão Senra, geographer and researcher at Instituto Socioambiental. It assesses the material and health impacts of the Yanomami, analyzes the role of illegal miners in this situation, and discusses the responsibility of the Bolsonaro government.

The podcast also listens to Hanna Limulja, an anthropologist and indigenist who has been working with the Yanomami since 2008. She talks about how the crisis affects these people’s values, rituals and beliefs.
