Podcast addresses science with residents of Heliópolis – 04/11/2023 – New in Folha

The De Olho Na Quebrada Observatory, linked to a community association in Heliópolis, published a series of science podcasts on Spotify. The program aims to popularize the theme in the largest favela in São Paulo.
Helipa na Ciência, as the series is called, is presented by two young people from the community, Sabrina Oliveira, 22, and Moroni Henrique, 20 – both are students at the Federal University of ABC. The first is studying public policy and economic sciences, and the second, a degree in human sciences.
The series was broadcast on Rádio Heliópolis in October last year. At the time, the six weekly episodes were recorded live and lasted two hours each. Now, the production of the show has selected the best moments of the episodes and published, on Spotify, six episodes of about 30 minutes – they have been available on the platform since March 27th.
Among the topics addressed are climate change, popular economy, health and pollution. All subjects were chosen by the residents of the community, according to Cilene Victor, professor of communication at the Methodist University of São Paulo and one of the organizers of the initiative.
“We really liked the horizontality of the project and decided that the community should choose the themes. So, the kids and the researchers from the observatory carried out the opinion poll and from there came the six themes”, he says.
“We recommended names to be interviewed, such as representatives of the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science, but they also suggested specialists”, he adds.
The project also included workshops for young people from the observatory. Before the episodes were broadcast, for example, the teachers gave classes to the group participants on voiceover, press relations, introduction to journalism and fact-checking.
The six episodes can be found on Spotify, searching on the “Helipa na Ciência” platform. The project is funded by the Serrapilheira Institute.
