PM: wild boars are seized from illegal breeding in SC – 02/12/2024 – Market

The Military Environmental Police of Caçador, in Santa Catarina, seized five wild boars on a private property, which were raised illegally. The animals were collected and taken for sanitary slaughter.

A December 2023 law prohibits this type of agricultural creation in the state, as it contributes negatively to the destruction of local flora and fauna. The owner was fined.

The police arrived at the location, a farm in the interior of Calmon, 440 km from Florianópolis, after receiving an anonymous tip. The animals were seized on January 31st.

The agents located the property and identified the person responsible, who confirmed the fact and showed where the animals were.

Wild boars and their crosses (javaporcos) have been banned by state legislation since December 2023, according to law 18,817, which “provides for population control and sustainable management of the European wild boar (sus scrofa) in all its forms, lineages, breeds and different degrees of crossing”.

The PM reports that the owner was prosecuted for not having licenses to breed invasive exotic animals.

The breeding of wild boars in the country has become a problem debated for years by the agricultural sector, with a strong position from the CNA (Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil), which works to combat it. The wild boar is an animal that reproduces quickly, is not easy to control and moves easily.

It can travel up to 70 km per day, which makes mapping and controlling populations difficult. A female can give birth to up to two litters per year, with more than 10 puppies per pregnancy.

A survey carried out by a group of Brazilian and foreign researchers shows that the wild boar population has tripled in the country in the last ten years.

According to the study, released in December 2023, 1,152 municipalities reported sightings in 2022, with emphasis on the South and Southeast regions. In 2012, ten years ago, there were 370 municipalities.

The official measurement of the presence of this animal in the country was interrupted in 2021 by the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL).

The Chamber of Deputies and the federal government have debated the issue. The National Wild Boar Prevention, Control and Monitoring Plan in Brazil, created in 2017 under the Temer government, expired in January 2022. The government is evaluating a new version, but there is no set date.
