Proposal adds to the Law electronic smoking devices such as vaper, pod, e-cigarette

Manaus (AM) — The Constitution, Justice and Writing Commission (CCJR) of the Manaus City Council (CMM) approved, this Wednesday (21), the Bill (PL) 207/2023 that amends Law 1.364, of August 19, 2009, which prohibits the consumption of cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, pipes and derivatives in collective use environments.

The proposal, presented by councilor Gilmar Nascimento (no party) adds electronics for smoking, popularly called electronic cigarettes such as vaper, pod, e-cigarette, e-ciggy, e-pipe, e-cigar, heatnotburn, among other nomenclatures, based on vaping, whether or not derived from tobacco.

According to Gilmar Nascimento, the proposal aims to curb the large increase in cases of respiratory emergencies from the use of new electronic devices.

“Many people come into contact with smoking from the electronic cigarette, which is more present among adolescents and young adults, who are seduced by the habit of smoking and the modernity of devices, and end up being led to traditional smoking”

explained the parliamentarian.

Other projects

During the meeting, another 22 Projects were also analyzed. Among the proposals with a favorable opinion, 14 were approved and one received a request for review. Out of eight projects with a contrary opinion, six had their opinion upheld and two received a request for review.

Among the approved projects are Councilor Wallace Oliveira’s 029/2023 (no party) which prohibits the sale in pet shops of dogs and cats from non-legalized breeders; the 014/2021 of councilor William Alemão (Citizenship) which creates the Parliamentary Front in Defense of the Free Zone of Manaus and the 569/2021 of councilor Thaysa Lippy (PP) which gives priority to enrollment in kindergartens in the municipal education network for disabled children .

The meeting, conducted by councilor Gilmar Nascimento, president of the CCJR, was attended by councilors Fransuá Matos (PV), Raiff Matos (DC), Thaysa Lippy, professor Jacqueline (União Brasil) and William Alemão.
