PL of Fake News is not censorship, says Marcos Pereira – 04/27/2023 – Panel

National president of the Republicans, federal deputy Marcos Pereira (SP) says that the Fake News bill is not censorship and that there is a lot of distorted narrative about the project.

The party and its parliamentarians have been pressured on social networks for having supported the urgent approval of the text on Tuesday (25), thus accelerating its processing.

In the acronym, 28 of the 36 deputies voted in favor. Comparatively, in União Brasil, the base party of Lula’s government (PT), only 19 out of 47 congressmen voted “yes”. In the PL, Jair Bolsonaro’s party, 79 out of 85 were against it.

In a video recorded for the party’s evangelical base and to be published on social networks, Pereira says that all Brazilians with good sense and common sense are against fake news, emphasizes that the PL does not cover religious manifestations, as has been propagated, and reads excerpts from the text that explicitly say so.

Federal deputy Deltan Dallagnol (Podemos-PR), for example, published a message that says that verses from the Bible will be banned from social networks after the proposal is approved, which does not apply.

Pereira asks for calm and patience to discuss the project which, according to him, is still not good. “If at the end, Tuesday, which is when the vote is scheduled, the text is not in line with what we believe, we will vote against it”, he says.

Finally, he claims that evangelicals have been victims of fake news their entire lives and that there needs to be some rule against them.

“Until now, I’ve only seen a lot of fallacy from those who don’t see what they’re talking about”, he concludes.

In another video, Pereira claims that the Republicans are not “addicted to radicalism” and that their manifesto defends freedom of expression while respecting common sense and the rule of law.
