Proposal aims to intensify management, with the efficiency of productivity and profitability
Manaus (AM) – To encourage and standardize the raising of goats and sheep in the Amazon, state deputy Roberto Cidade (UB), president of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam), proposed Bill (PL) No. The initiative aims to allow the protein and other derivatives of these animals, such as milk and leather, to become a new economic matrix in the local livestock sector. The proposal was approved in plenary and awaits government sanction.
“The raising of sheep and goats is an activity on the rise in Amazonas, already being the main form of livelihood for many families, especially in the interior. An incentive policy is important to stimulate the market, improving production and guaranteeing the production of jobs and income”,

In addition to increasing the production scale of sheep and goat farming, the proposal aims to intensify management, with the efficiency of productivity and profitability; regularize the supply and standardization of the products of this activity; improving the quality of products offered to the consumer, food safety, regularization of slaughter and trade; encouraging industrial, family and artisanal processing of products from sheep and goats; research and technical assistance and rural extension, for the technological modernization and management of sheep and goat production chains; Among other things.
In Amazonas, this type of livestock has been gaining strength. In 2019, the market for raising sheep and goats totaled 60,789 in herds, of which 14,381 were goats and 46,408 were sheep, according to updated data from the Secretariat of Rural Production of the State of Amazonas (Sepror).
The Northeast region is the largest producer of goats and sheep in the country, with 57.24% of production. Brazil has about 13 million head of goats, being the ninth largest herd in the world, but it contributes with only 1.3% of world milk production.
