PGR should not submit to vote, says Aras about list – 06/01/2023 – Panel

The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, told the Panel that “countermajoritarian” positions like his should not be submitted to a peer vote. The same happens with military commands and university presidents, since scrutiny could interfere with the independence of decisions.

“Otherwise these positions end up gaining contours of majority positions [como governadores e senadores]but with a problem: the majoritarians are temporary, while the countermajoritarians are for life, and that causes distortion”, he said.

Aras was chosen PGR by former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) out of the triple list, organized from a vote of prosecutors. It has no legal provision, however.

The prosecutor gave the statement when asked about the triple stripe of the ANPR (National Association of Public Prosecutors), which closed registrations this Monday (30). Aras’ mandate ends in September 2023. In theory, he can be reappointed to the post by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

Only three representatives of the Public Prosecutor’s Office qualified to run: the sub-Attorneys General of the Republic Luiza Frischeisen, Marios Bonsaglia and José Adonis Callou.

The association followed the tradition, although President Lula, who is responsible for the choice, has already declared that he will not commit to the names presented by the category.

Aras claims to consider his mission accomplished and denies interest in occupying the PGR for a third term. “The projects I would like to implement I have already implemented. Now it’s time to let others follow.”
