The acting Attorney General of the Republic, Elizeta Ramos, defended this Thursday (7), in the Federal Supreme Court (STF), that the omission of state, municipal and federal governments in protecting the environment be recognized. The Court began judging three actions in which political parties question the Bolsonaro government’s measures for the environment.
The parties also demand the development of a government plan to combat deforestation in the Amazon and to prevent fires in the forest and Pantanal. In the opinion, the prosecutor pointed out the existence of an “unconstitutional state of affairs” in all Brazilian political spheres in the environmental area.
For Elizeta, although the current government has adopted measures to combat fires and deforestation, the country has a history of “environmental neglect”, and the measures need to be implemented continuously, informed the Brazil Agency.
“We are facing a climate emergency, which threatens individual, social, environmental and economic rights. The effects of the climate crisis are already present, as we have felt in recent years, and its progress and cumulative worsening are expected in the future “, he stated.
After the prosecutor’s statement, the trial was suspended. The date for the resumption of the merit analysis has not yet been defined. The rapporteur, Minister André Mendonça, has not yet presented his vote.
This Wednesday (6), the STF heard oral arguments from the Attorney General’s Office (AGU), the parties and entities involved in the process. Of the three actions analyzed, the first was filed by Psol, PSB, PT and Rede Sustentabilidade (ADPF 857); the second was presented by Rede (ADPF 743); and the third was filed by the PT (ADPF 746).
