PF targets Carlos Bolsonaro in unfolding operation on Abin

This Monday morning (29), the Federal Police carried out an operation against councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (Republicanos-RJ), from Rio de Janeiro. According to the corporations, the action is an offshoot of Operation Close Surveillance, launched last week and which targeted a group allegedly involved in an illegal espionage scheme within the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin).

“In this new stage, the Federal Police seeks to advance in the political core, identifying the main recipients and beneficiaries of information produced illegally within the scope of Abin, through clandestine actions. In these actions, investigation techniques typical of the judicial police were used, without, however , any judicial or Public Ministry control”, says the PF in an official note sent to the report.

The son of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) is the target of this operation on suspicion of having received data collected illegally by Abin. One of the search locations is Carlos Bolsonaro’s office at the Rio de Janeiro City Council, where a computer and documents were seized.

In total, eight search and seizure warrants are being executed. In addition to the councilor’s office, his house in Barra da Tijuca is also a target of the PF.

The operation also complies with warrants in Angra dos Reis (RJ), Brasília (DF), Formosa (GO) and Salvador (BA). The parliamentarian’s advisors are also targets of the operation, as well as a PF agent who was part of Abin’s staff in the previous administration.

The warrants were authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), with a positive statement from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).

According to the PF, those under investigation may be liable for the crimes of invading someone else’s computer device, criminal organization and interception of telephone, IT or telematics communications without judicial authorization or for purposes not authorized by law.

According to sources, this Monday’s operation (29) is the beginning of an investigation of people who may have benefited from the illegal collection of information at Abin during the management of the then general director Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ), who today occupies the position of federal deputy.

In addition to Carlos Bolsonaro, the PF investigation pointed out, last week, that senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and Jair Renan Bolsonaro — Jair Bolsonaro’s “04” son — also benefited from information collected by the monitoring program from Abin.

The three operations against people linked and allied to the former president were classified by the opposition as “open political persecution”.

Ramagem was the commander of Abin during the period in which the FirstMile program was in operation, between the end of Michel Temer’s (MDB) government and the third year of Bolsonaro’s government. Investigations indicate that the software could monitor cell phones and tablets belonging to authorities such as politicians and judges.

Alexandre Ramagem denied all suspicions and said, shortly after the operation, that he ordered an audit of the First Mile contract as soon as he took office, at the beginning of 2019. According to him, it was the result of this analysis that led to the operation. by the Federal Police.

Despite being a councilor in Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Bolsonaro stood out throughout Jair Bolsonaro’s government for taking care of his father’s social networks. In mid-April last year, he announced that he would leave the role, but returned to work with him shortly afterwards.
