The Federal Police carried out a search and seizure warrant at the Angra 1 Nuclear Power Plant this Thursday morning (11), in Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro. The PF action is part of the investigations that investigate the leakage of water contaminated with nuclear waste, in September 2022.
At the time, the leakage of radioactive material into the sea at Itaorna Bay, in Angra dos Reis, was only reported by Eletronuclear to Ibama and the National Nuclear Energy Commission 21 days after the incident.
The Federal Police Station of Angra dos Reis opened two investigations that seek to clarify alleged omissions in the communication of events, as well as environmental crimes.
At the time, the company stated that the material represented “a small volume of water containing substances with a low level of radioactivity”. He also said that the amount was “below the limits of the legislation that characterize the occurrence of an accident” and, therefore, “treated the event as an operational incident and informed the matter in the regular reports foreseen”.
In March of this year, the company had to carry out a complete assessment of the damage caused by the accident, after determination by the Federal Court.
The Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rio de Janeiro filed a public civil action in which it questions the company’s stance and points to Eletronuclear’s attempt to hide the leak.
Eletronuclear was questioned by Folha regarding this Thursday’s operation, but the company had not commented until the publication of this report.
