The Federal Police opened a police inquiry this Tuesday (22nd) to determine the causes of the blackout that left 25 states and the Federal District without electricity on August 15th. “The investigation, which runs in secrecy, investigates the crimes of sabotage and attacks against the security of public utility services,” the corporation said in a statement.
The Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, asked the Ministry of Justice and Public Security that the Federal Police and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) investigate the causes of the lack of energy.
On the 16th, Silveira said that the blackout started on a line operated by Chesf, a subsidiary of Eletrobras, between Quixadá and Fortaleza, in Ceará. The company said that the occurrence pointed out by the National Electric System Operator (ONS) would not be enough to cause shortages in almost the entire country.
