The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, said this Monday (13), that the Federal Police (PF) is taking steps in the inquiry launched to investigate the case of jewelry presented to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro for the government of Saudi Arabia. Eventually, the former chief executive may be summoned to testify in the inquiry.
“We have steps taking place right now. There are people being heard every day,” said Dino, as he left an event on freedom of expression, at the headquarters of the Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), in Rio.
According to Dino, if Bolsonaro does not respond to any subpoena and remains abroad, the Brazilian government could eventually trigger international cooperation mechanisms to make him testify.
“At some point, as investigated, the former president will be summoned to give testimony. And then, if he does not appear, a new situation arises, in which international legal cooperation mechanisms may or may not be activated,” said the minister. .
Even so, Dino assesses that the PF is able to finish the investigations without necessarily taking a statement from Bolsonaro. On the other hand, the minister pointed out that giving the statement, if it were even under investigation, would be a right of the former president, to fully exercise his defense.
“We are facing facts that have documentary evidence. They are images, films, letters, papers, the so-called material evidence. We have other people being heard, in witness evidence. So, yes, it will be possible to complete the investigation regardless of whether it is heard or not I hope he attends, because it’s his right”, completed Dino.
