The first half of June did not record any deforestation alerts due to illegal mining in the Yanomami indigenous land, according to the PF (Federal Police) monitoring system. The data shows, for the corporation, that the crisis that had its most acute moment at the beginning of the year is under control.
On February 10, the PF launched Operation Liberation, together with the Armed Forces, Ibama, PRF (Federal Highway Police) and environmental agencies, after the humanitarian calamity in the indigenous land came to light. Since then, the instances have maintained their presence in the region to mitigate illegal mining.
The numbers have been decreasing ever since. In April 2022, for example, 444 deforestation alerts were recorded in the tool used by the corporation, which uses satellite images. In April 2023, there were only 19. In May, the figure dropped to 10. In June, there was no alert until last Thursday (15).
Illegal mining would have moved BRL 64 million in two years, according to the PF. Shell companies were used in an attempt to give financial transactions an air of legality, according to investigations. The money came from buying and selling illegal gold.
