PF backs down and gives Bolsonaro access to the jewelry survey – 03/20/2023 – Mônica Bergamo

The Federal Police (PF) backed down and granted the defense of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) access to the investigation that investigates the former president for his alleged involvement in the case of jewelry brought from Saudi Arabia.

In a first decision, the body had stated that Bolsonaro was not formally investigated and, therefore, denied full access to the file.

The ex-president’s lawyers, however, contested the denial and stated that several media vehicles and even the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, had already declared that the former president should be called to explain.

“Despite not formally appearing in the records as being investigated, it seems that this is how the petitioner has been treated and treated by the holder of the ministerial portfolio [Flávio Dino]under which this investigative body is located [a PF]”, he stated in a letter.

“Access to the records, even if confidential, is the minimum concrete repercussion of the fundamental right to full defense, which, it goes without saying, works and should always work as a pillar of the democratic State of Law”, said the defense of the former -president, which is led by lawyer Paulo Amador da Cunha Bueno.

The luxury jewelry box seized by the Federal Revenue and which was supposedly intended for former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro kept a white gold necklace with pendants, studded with diamonds, as well as earrings, a ring and a watch by the Swiss brand Chopard.

Luxury items were seized in October 2021. At the time, a military officer who advised the then Minister Bento Albuquerque (Mines and Energy) tried to land in Brazil, after traveling to Saudi Arabia, with the case in his backpack. As the goods had not been declared, they were retained by the Federal Revenue Service.

A second package, not intercepted by the tax auditors, was delivered to the Presidency last November to compose Jair Bolsonaro’s personal file. It contains a watch, pen, cufflinks, a type of rosary and a ring also by Chopard.

The former president’s personal collection accumulated during his visit to the Planalto goes far beyond the package sent by Saudi Arabia, according to a report by Folha. The list includes 44 watches, 74 knives, 54 necklaces, 112 ties, 618 caps, 448 soccer jerseys and 245 face shields, as well as ammunition and a bulletproof vest.

Last week, the TCU (Tribunal de Contas da União) determined that Bolsonaro deliver to the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic the jewelry he received as a gift from Saudi Arabia.

In addition to them, the weapons that the then president brought back in 2019 from a trip to the Middle East were required. The then president received a pistol and a rifle as a gift from representatives of the United Arab Emirates that year.

The rifle was customized with Bolsonaro’s name, according to information published by the Metrópoles website. The pistol can have prices ranging from R$5,900 to R$15,600. Similar rifle models cost between R$32 and R$42,000.
