PF and ICMBio investigate arson in biological reserve in Amapá – News of Brazil

Last Thursday, the 28th, the Federal Police (PF) and ICMBio carried out a crackdown on several fires in a federal reserve region in Amapá.
According to information, the fire began on November 14th and spread across a region of approximately six thousand hectares, of which five thousand belong to the Lago Piratuba Biological Reserve, in the region of Cutias do Araguari, in the interior of the state.
The PF and ICMBio had the support of a Blackhawk helicopter, manned by air force personnel. The servers flew over the reserve region for around three days, investigating the possible causes of the fires, as well as those responsible.
After investigations, a man and two teenagers were identified as the perpetrators of the fire.
They reported that they had gone hunting and fishing in the reserve, when they stopped at a certain point to eat and used fire to cook the food.
The individuals did not bother to put out the fire, which caused the fire to catch the vegetation around the area, which was very dry, and spread very quickly, causing a huge impact on the local fauna and flora, with the death of several animals and the destruction of local vegetation.
An estimated loss of R$54 million in fines for perpetrators of crimes of this magnitude is calculated.
The three people identified may be charged with arson and the older man will also be charged with corruption of minors. In case of conviction, penalties can reach six years in prison.
