Petrobras now requires its suppliers to take actions to promote and defend human rights, such as combating work analogous to slavery, child labor, sexual exploitation, moral or sexual harassment and discrimination of any type.

The state-owned company says that the “integrity due diligence” process will include these policies among the requirements for a supplier to be considered capable of selling or providing services to the company. Also on the list of policies to be observed are those that guarantee freedom of association and collective bargaining and the promotion of diversity and inclusion.

The rule comes into effect this Monday (2). The state-owned oil and gas company has more than 234 thousand registered companies.

“We believe that Petrobras can significantly promote the promotion of human rights in the country”, says Mário Spinelli, the company’s director of governance and compliance. “This initiative will require all companies that wish to do business with Petrobras to demonstrate that they also have effective actions to respect and defend human rights.”

Petrobras adopted due diligence processes in 2015. Suppliers need to maintain governance, compliance and audit systems compatible with their sizes. After analysis by the company, each supplier receives a risk level, which can be low, medium or high.
