Cats and dogs

At this time of year, many pets suffer poisoning due to eating inappropriate foods served at dinner.

Manaus (AM) – The end of the year brings an atmosphere of parties, get-togethers, special foods, trips and, without a doubt, a well-deserved rest. But for those who have a companion or four-legged companion, it is also time to double their care and attention.

According to experts from the Nilton Lins Veterinary Hospital (HVet), at this time of year many pets suffer poisoning due to the ingestion of inappropriate foods served at dinner and which contain ingredients that are not recommended for animals such as mayonnaise, raisins, farofa and mainly chocolate.

“Cats and dogs do not have enzymes to metabolize these substances and unfortunately these cases are common these days, as is the ingestion of alcoholic beverages, which are totally prohibited and should at no time be offered under serious risk to the health of the animals”,

explained the coordinator of the Veterinary Medicine course and director of HVet, Gigliola Clark Pontes.

Fireworks

The expert also warns that the noise from fireworks is the main stress factor for pets on New Year’s Eve, as dogs and cats have more acute hearing than humans, which makes the sound even louder, threatening and uncomfortable. .

According to Gigliola, to lessen the impact it is important not to leave them alone at home and on New Year’s Eve, prepare a comfortable and safe indoor space, closing windows and curtains to prevent light from entering, in addition to offering toys and snacks. Sabrina also recommends turning on the TV or playing relaxing music in the room.

“The presence of the guardian will make the pet feel safer, but if this is not possible, it is important not to leave them outside the house to avoid the risk of escape, or tied up with collars or chains, to avoid injuries and serious accidents. ”,

states.

The veterinarian also adds that the presence of guests inside the house for dinners and family parties changes the animals’ routine and daily life and is another stressful factor that can be minimized with the use of herbal medicines, under medical supervision, which make them more relaxed and comfortable.

Hospital

In the last week of 2023, the Nilton Lins Veterinary Hospital will operate at its normal hours (9am to 3pm) between December 26th and 29th, and will resume its activities, consultations and services on Tuesday, January 2nd.

The hospital is located on the Nilton Lins University campus, in the Parque das Laranjeiras neighborhood (next to the main building), with social rates that are accessible to all audiences, in addition to a modern structure that includes offices, new equipment and professionals specialized in the area. .
