People who discourage a skeptical view of the world – 11/09/2023 – Jorge Abrahão

Wars, terrorist attacks and inhumane massacre of people. Astonished, we watch a parade of violence and insanity whose main actors are the leaders of the world’s greatest powers. Each one looking at their immediate interest, their electoral stake, responding to opinion polls and incapable of empathy and decisions based on human rights. They are more instigators of war than agents of peace: Putin, Biden, Netanyahu and Zelensky leave no doubt about the poverty of global leadership. In this context, it is clear that only the democratization of the UN, with the end of the veto policy by the five countries of the Security Council, can bring hope for the emergence of a new model of global governance that is up to the current challenges. Meanwhile, time progresses and life passes.

In the climate crisis we are reaping the fruits of our irresponsible actions, worried that we have been creating “toys” that bring us comfort and fill our voids and needs, but disregard their impacts. There are warnings and proposals from the UN IPCC suggesting actions by countries to prevent the worsening of climate change. It seems clear that we are good at the ability to do and bad at the ability to understand the impact of what we do. It is up to leaders to make decisions that establish limits based on the collective good. But here, too, rich countries do not comply with agreements made to finance developing countries. Meanwhile, time progresses and life passes.

From a social point of view, more than half of the world’s population is poor, barely able to provide the basics to survive. Eight hundred million go hungry and one hundred million wander the world in search of a place to settle, fleeing conflicts and changes in the environment. As wealth increases, poverty only grows. Something is wrong in this equation: we know how to create wealth, but we are unable to distribute it. It seems clear that it is the responsibility of governments to mediate and establish survival conditions for the entire population, even if it has to establish limits for the super-rich. Meanwhile, time progresses and life passes.

In these moments, disbelief in humanity’s ability to find ways out of crises takes over us. But there are people who, with their actions and behavior, discourage a skeptical view of the world and point to another way of leading.

At the UN, António Guterres strives to raise awareness among leaders regarding the socio-environmental chaos we are experiencing.

In the Vatican, the Pope shouts for the common sense of countries, incredulous in the commitment to destruction.

The Brazilian government itself, in its rapid passage as president of the UN Security Council, tried to build paths and propose peace agreements, dialogued with countries, aligned proposals, encouraged agreements, in the search for a diplomatic alternative.

In our country, we just lost Danilo Miranda. That leaves a rare mark in the world of culture. Danilo was able to value culture even during difficult times in Brazil. He remained firm in his ideal of democratizing culture and giving space to all forms of artistic expression.

These people bring us hope that it is still possible to build a society that considers our spectacular diversity as an asset, not a problem, and that resistance is worth it so as not to let the violent and exclusionary vision of countries that prevail. they only look at themselves when problems go beyond borders and require a more complex and sophisticated vision of reality. They are leaders from the past in a world that demands new standards of sensitivity so that we can promote peace, social justice and preserve the environment.

Change is difficult, but there are many examples of people who inspire us to make the necessary transformations.
