Daughter of Pelé, Kely Nascimento was in the audience of The Best award, granted by FIFA, in Paris, which paid homage to her father, who died in December, aged 82. During the ceremony, a trip to the bathroom ended up providing an emotional meeting, which she reported on her social networks on Thursday night. Kely “bumped” with Antonella Roccuzzo, Messi’s wife, and asked her to send a message to her husband: already hospitalized, Pelé cheered for the star and for Argentina’s title after Brazil’s elimination in the World Cup.
“After Brazil’s defeat, everyone who walked into that hospital room (the whole day and every day until the final) said: ‘What’s up, Pelé? Now who do you want to win? Of course not Argentina!’ he said: “Argentina yes! This cup has to stay in South America and Messi deserves it”. Everyone pretended (and sometimes didn’t pretend) horror: “how? Argentina?”, and he simply said: “yes, Messi deserves it,'” Kelly wrote.
She also revealed that the already delicate state of health prevented her father from following the final of the tournament between Argentina and France. But she assured that Pelé was happy with Messi’s title: “He was no longer able to watch television in the final, but he understood that Argentina won and Messi managed to lift the cup, and he was happy”.
Pelé was honored by FIFA during the “The Best” ceremony. A video with shots of the King was shown during the award ceremony and, in the sequence, speeches were made on stage by Ronaldo Fenômeno and Márcia Aoki, the idol’s widow. Singer Seu Jorge also presented a Portuguese version of the song “Changes”, by David Bowie, as a tribute to the greatest player of all time.
