PDT may have government support to chair the Chamber’s Environment Committee – 02/19/2023 – Panel

Deputy Duda Salabert (PDT-MG) received last Wednesday (15) a signal from Minister Alexandre Padilha (Institutional Relations) that, if the PT does not apply to the Chamber’s Environment Committee, the PDT could count on support of the government to command the collegiate.

The nod comes after information circulated that former Minister of the Environment Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), elected federal deputy for São Paulo, would be appointed to chair the commission — later, he denied that there was any articulation in this regard.

According to Salabert, in the conversation with Padilha, the minister said that the PDT has “great chances” of conquering space. “The idea is that if the PT is not going to claim this space, that an aligned party, from a political and ideological point of view, occupies this chair, since it is fundamental for the development of the Lula government’s climate agenda.”

Traditionally, the PDT usually pleads for the Labor commission. This year, however, the party decided to give up the collegiate seat to run for the Environment, according to the deputy. She said she had received support from the licensed president of the party, Carlos Lupi — the current Minister of Social Security.

If elected to head the commission, Salabert said her priority will be to strengthen the country’s environmental legislation and update it in the context of the climate crisis.

“It is necessary to curb the lobby of some fields that seek to dismantle the environmental legislation and deepen the climate and water crisis in the country,” he said. “We know that these anti-environmental sectors have a very large lobby in Congress. I think the first step is for us to be able to curb this agenda that has crossed Brazil in the last 4 years.”
