The Civil Police of Goiás closed this Wednesday (26) a clandestine laboratory in Anápolis (GO) that mixed anabolic steroids with paprika, a cooking spice.

In Operation Bomb, the police arrested a man appointed as the person in charge of the laboratory and leader of a network set up for the production and sale of adulterated anabolic steroids via social networks. His identity has not been revealed.

19 arrest warrants and 23 search and seizure warrants were issued, carried out in Goiânia, Anápolis and Silvânia (GO). The leader of the network was arrested in a luxury condominium in the capital.

With the group, assets totaling R$ 31 million were seized, including 11 luxury vehicles, such as a BMW valued at R$ 800,000, according to the police. Values were also blocked in checking accounts used, according to investigations, for money laundering.

Police say it is the largest illegal anabolic steroid laboratory in the country. In a new phase of investigations, the police will investigate health problems that may have been caused in consumers by the use of products manufactured by the clandestine laboratory.

According to investigations, paprika was used for its red color, the same as synthetic testosterone.

One of the delegates responsible for the case, Jorge Bezerra said that the investigations began a year ago.

“We learned that there would be an anabolic steroid factory in Anápolis. We started investigations and ended up confirming that the largest anabolic steroid factory in Brazil operated in the city”, said the policeman.

“It was not a question of suitable products. One was adulterated with paprika, to show that that substance would be purer, because the more amber, the redder, the more quality it would have”, explained Bezerra. One of the group’s Instagram pages had more than 100,000 followers, according to the police officer.

Another delegate, Luiz Carlos Cruz, who also participated in the investigations, said that the group had buyers in Goiás and in other states of the country. “It’s a very expressive universe of people,” he said.

The leader and the other members of the group may be liable for tampering with products, money laundering and criminal association. The seized assets may be reverted for use by the state police forces.
