Passengers double in São Caetano after zero fare – 11/11/2023 – Panel

Adherence to zero fares on public transport in São Caetano do Sul (Grande SP) caused the number of passengers to double in the city.
In one week of operation, the city of ABC São Paulo saw the number of passengers per day increase from 25 thousand to 50 thousand.
The city claims that, despite the increase, there are no reports of overcrowding. In practice, what changed was the profile of passengers: people who walked short distances started to use the bus system.
“This participation exceeded the initial expectation, which was an increase of 50%. This shows that the population has adhered to and approved the program. The number of passengers has increased, as has the bus fleet to meet demand. The service continues to be of quality, including the implementation of Wi-Fi on all buses”, said Mayor José Auricchio (PSDB).
The free pass came into effect on November 1st. São Caetano do Sul is today one of the 85 cities with free passes in the country.
