Partnership between company and NGO promotes volunteer action for children at GACC Amazonas

Manaus (AM) — In a joint effort to support children in the Amazon, Vaga Lume, which has been implementing community libraries in the region for 22 years, and Bemol, one of the largest retail groups in the North of the country, come together in a corporate volunteering action. The meeting will be held this Friday (12), and seeks to connect the company’s employees to the social organizations supported by it.

The meeting with volunteers begins in the morning in the auditorium of the Bemol office, in the center of Manaus. Vaga Lume’s work will be presented, as well as the different possibilities, in person or digitally, of becoming a volunteer at the NGO and a reading mediation workshop. In the afternoon, a reading mediation activity will be carried out with books from the Vaga Lume collection for a group of 30 children assisted by the Support Group for Children with Cancer in Amazonas (GACC Amazonas), who will be accompanied by their families.

Partners in 2024, in addition to directly supporting community libraries, the NGO develops an action with Bemol that also includes MOL Impacto, the largest social impact publisher in the world. The poster book “Let’s Play Together!” It is on sale in all Bemol stores and, whenever a book is sold, it generates a donation to Vaga Lume and also to GACC Amazonas. This is the second action of the partnership, which in 2021 launched the book “Só Tem Na Amazônia”, which reached the impressive mark of more than 38 thousand copies sold.

Since 2001, it has donated 163,000 books and trained more than 5,000 reading mediators, volunteers who read to children, work that has impacted the lives of 109,000 children and young people. Its purpose is to empower children and young people from rural communities in the Amazon through reading and the management of community libraries, promoting cultural exchanges with reading, writing and speaking to help form people who are more engaged in transforming their realities.

In 2023, Associação Vaga Lume was elected for the third time, two consecutively, the Best Education NGO in Brazil by the Best NGOs Award from Instituto Doar. In the same year, it was awarded the new United Earth Amazônia award, in the ESG category, from the English acronym Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance, and was also one of the organizations selected around the world to receive an donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
