Parliamentary fronts want bill on work on Sundays and holidays

After the controversy caused by the government ordinance that created difficulties for working on Sundays and holidays, parliamentarians are moving to approve a bill on the subject this year, thus avoiding possible new interference from the Ministry of Labor. The information is from the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.
On the 14th, Minister Luiz Marinho had published an ordinance that affected several sectors of commerce, such as pharmacies and supermarkets, determining that work on Sundays and holidays would have to be approved by the respective unions, in a collective agreement. The regulations annulled 2021 rules that required negotiation between employers and employees. The parliamentary reaction was immediate, and there was a great possibility of approval of a draft legislative decree (PDL) that would overturn the new ordinance. Given the articulation, Marinho backed down and postponed the entry into force of any new rules until March 2024; During this period, there would be discussions between the government, representatives of the affected sectors and workers.
However, according to Sheet, four parliamentary fronts (Entrepreneurship, Commerce and Services, Agriculture and Competitive Brazil) decided to initiate coordination to move forward with a bill in Congress and, thus, protect themselves against new “unpleasant surprises” from the government – in addition to the content of the ordinance itself, there was a lot of criticism of its publication, with immediate effect, on the eve of a holiday and with consequences for end-of-year sales. A meeting of the presidents of the four fronts should take place in the coming days to outline a common strategy.
