Unlike the Brazilian population, deputies and senators only return to work, in the legislative houses, next Monday

The 513 federal deputies and 81 senators of the Republic will meet again for committees or sessions in the federal Legislative Branch from the 19th, according to the available agenda of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate consulted by the Estadão on the afternoon of this Tuesday, 13th. The measure creates a carnival “small recess” for parliamentarians who, unlike the majority of the Brazilian population, return to plenary sessions five days after Ash Wednesday.

According to Senate data, next week begins with a session starting at 2pm, but not deliberative – that is, a meeting intended for speeches, communications, reading of proposals and other matters of political and parliamentary interest. For now, three senators appear as registered speakers: Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE), Paulo Paim (PT-RS) and Flávio Dino (PSB-MA).

In the Chamber of Deputies, movement only occurs from the 21st, shows the House’s agenda. On that occasion, there will be “a meeting of the women’s bench and partner bodies to take stock of the progress made in 2023 and discuss the prospects for the 2024 legislative session”. Sessions to vote on proposals, however, do not appear on the Chamber’s agenda. According to the internal regulations of both Houses, the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), can convene, if necessary, extraordinary sessions at any time. When they return to work, parliamentarians will have thorny issues to deal with, such as Provisional measure (MP) 1,202/2023, which discusses the re-encumbrance of the payroll and which generates a clash between Lula and several benches in both Houses.
