The Paris 2024 Olympic Village opened five months before the games. The opening ceremony, this Thursday (29), was attended by French President Emmanuel Macron.
The work began in 2021 and has 82 buildings, 3,000 apartments and 7,200 rooms to receive more than 15,000 athletes during the Olympics, with 207 delegations, and Paralympics, with 185 commissions. The Villa is located on the banks of the River Seine, in the Parisian suburbs. The value of the work was estimated at 2 billion euros.
The games will take place during the French summer, where temperatures can exceed 40 degrees between July and August. Even so, the organization built units without air conditioning with the promise of saving electricity and reducing carbon emissions. The IOC had promised that the 2024 edition would be the most sustainable of the games. The institution promises to use recycled plastic in the construction of the arenas and reuse of the structure of the City of Lights.
Yann Krysinski, Paris 2024’s chief operating officer for venue delivery and infrastructure, told Reuters that the buildings are efficiently insulated and can maintain low temperatures despite heatwaves.
“We designed these buildings to be comfortable places to live in the summer. We don’t need air conditioning in these buildings because we oriented the facades so that they don’t receive too much sun during the summer,” Krysinski said.
He added that the site will use naturally cool groundwater to help control heat without air conditioning. In 2025, the apartments will be sold and the region will become a residential complex.
This is the third edition of the games in the French capital. At the 1924 games, the first Olympic Village in history was founded and, at the time, received 44 delegations.
