Ceará archer Eugênio Franco had a lot to celebrate this Wednesday (22) at Parapan de Santiago (Chile). The 63-year-old athlete – the most experienced of the Brazilian delegation in the Chilean capital – secured the gold medal by beating North American Jason Tabansky 135 to 123 in the final of compound archery in the WH1 class (athletes with severe disabilities in three or four members). Today alone, Brazil, the leader in the medals table, climbed the podium more than 40 times.

“Expectations are very high for Paris. I want to bring the first archery medal to Brazil at the Games”said Eugênio Franco, who will be 64 on December 15th and has ankylosing spondylitis, a rheumatic disease that affects the joints.

Synonymous with guaranteeing medals in Santiago, swimming had another day full of podiums. It started with a double in the 50m freestyle class S12 (low vision) with a second gold from Pernambuco’s Carol Santiago, with a time of 27.18 and bronze from Pará’s Lucilene Sousa (28.62). Silver went to North American Grace Nuhfer (27.90). The pair shined again in the 100m freestyle, this time with gold and silver, respectively. Carol won by completing the competition in 1min00s12, and Lucilene (1min02s10) came in second place. Third place, with bronze, was Venezuelan Belkis Mota (1min08.00).

“This competition is different, it gives a simulation of what the Paralympic Games will be like and I am very happy to enter, fall in the water and be fighting for gold for Brazil. I think that today we have a visual team that is very strong, when we go to a World Championship, we rock, we really scare the other athletes and I just have to thank you because it is a real pleasure to be part of this team”the Pernambuco native, Paralympic champion at the Tokyo Games, spilled out.

There was also a double green and yellow podium with gold and silver in the 100m breaststroke event in the SB5 class (physical-motor impairment). Laila Suzigan from Minas Gerais secured the gold and broke the Pan-American record by finishing the course in 1min57s01 – the previous mark of 1min59s32 was achieved by compatriot Paloma Sampaio, in the 2015 edition, in Toronto. The silver went to the collection of Esthefany Rodrigues (2min06s07), who the day before had already won gold. In third, with bronze was Mexican Vianney Trejo (2min06s59).

“This is a very different competition from the World Cup. There we have more specific tests, these are generally our main ones. Here, Esthefany and I swim practically as much as we can. It’s a very tiring, extensive competition, but it’s good because we try to perform for a long time. I think we are swimming well, even at the end of the year, with the tiredness of the season, and focusing on Paris now”analyzed Suzigan.

Among men, Roberto Alcade from Rio Grande do Sul won gold in the 100m breaststroke event in the SB5 class (physical-motor impairment), with a time of 1min37s11, ahead of Argentine German Arevalo (1min39s82), second placed, and also Colombian Julián Triana (1min45s11) who took bronze.

The first men’s double on the podium was in the 100m backstroke event in class S11 (blind athletes), with gold from Brasilia native Wendell Belarmino, who clocked a time of 1min13s64 and bronze from Rio de Janeiro native José Perdigão (1min18s47). Colombian Leider Lemus (1min16s9) came second and took silver.

Gabriel Araújo, aka Gabrielzinho, from Minas Gerais, won his third gold medal in Santiago this Wednesday (22). He was the fastest in the 50m freestyle in class S2 (physical-motor impairment), with a time of 52s09. Completing the podium, silver went to Chilean Alberto Abarza (1min02.33) and bronze to Mexican Cristopher Tronco, with 1min05s18.

“Third race, third gold, third Parapan-American record. I’m very happy, very satisfied. I wanted a little more, because I’m a guy who demands a lot of myself, so I always want more, but it was the best I had for that moment. I leave very satisfied and very happy that my family is here supporting and cheering me on. Today was the race that I wanted most in this Parapan, it was the race that I was most focused on, that I had trained the most”he said Gabriel Araújo, 21, who has phocomelia, a congenital disease that prevents the complete formation of arms and legs.
