The competitions this Sunday (29) at the Pan American Games in Santiago, marked by an error in measuring the course of the women’s race walking competition, yielded victories that allowed Brazil to surpass the one hundred medals won. Brazil has 31 golds, 39 silvers and 33 bronzes, totaling 103 medals.
In the men’s race walking event, Caio Bonfim repeated his 2019 result and came in second place in the men’s race walking event, surpassed by Ecuadorian David Hurtado, who took gold.
Hurtado crossed the finish line, with the adjusted course distance, with a time of 1h19m20s, while Caio completed the race in 1h19m24s. Third place was Mexican Andrés Olivas (1h19m56).
Canoeing
The biggest highlight of the day was the canoe slalom, in which Brazil won three gold medals.
Ana Sátila achieved her third consecutive title in the women’s C1 (individual canoe) category, reaching the mark of five medals at the Pan American Games. The athlete also won gold in kayak cross, the same category won by Guilherme Mapelli in the men’s competition.
Brazil also reached the podium in three other finals in the sport. Kauã da Silva, in the men’s C1, Pedro Gonçalvez, in the men’s K1 (individual kayak), and Omira Estácia, in the women’s K1, took silver medals.
Judo
There were also important victories in judo, with Gabriel Falcão winning gold and Daniel Cargnin winning silver in the under-73 kg category. The athletes would star in the first Brazilian final of the sport at the Pan American Games, but Cargnin, favorite for the title, suffered an injury in the semi-final and, to save himself, decided not to fight the final, paving the way for Falcão to win the title.
Another gold was won by Guilherme Schmidt, who beat Chilean Jorge Pérez in the under 81 kg category.
In the women’s category up to 63 kg, Ketleyn Quadros beat Colombian Cindy Paola Mera in the dispute for third place and took bronze.
Aquatic marathon
Ana Marcela Cunha, Olympic champion at the Tokyo 2021 Games, won the silver medal in the aquatic marathon and was accompanied on the podium by Brazilian Viviane Jungblut, bronze winner.
The champion was American Ashley Twichell, who dominated much of the 10 kilometers of the race until crossing the finish line with a time of 1h57m16s in the waters of Lake Los Morros, south of the Chilean capital.
Ana Marcela, who underwent shoulder surgery in November, acknowledged that it took her a while to adapt to wearing a neoprene suit — mandatory due to the water temperature of 17 degrees —, which she had not competed in for months.
The Brazilian said this Sunday (29) that she trusts in the safety of the Paris 2024 Games, which should be held on the River Seine. Several competitions have recently been suspended there due to poor water quality.
Ana Marcela said she expected a very difficult race in the French capital. “There will be a lot of current in the river, but for us it’s 10 km, whether in cold or hot water, river or sea.”
Other modalities
In equestrianism, Marcio Jorge took silver in the individual final and, in the team jumping competition, the Brazilian team (Marcio Jorge, Rafael Mamprin, Carlos Parro and Ruy Fonseca) took bronze.
The country also won bronze in the singles draw of men’s tennis, with Thiago Monteiro’s victory over fellow Brazilian Gustavo Heide by 2 sets to 0.
On Saturday night (28), the country had also reached the podium with Gustavo Heide and Marcelo Demoliner, gold in the men’s doubles, and Luisa Stefani and Marcelo Demoliner, silver in the mixed doubles.
