Palmeiras faces Atlético in the Libertadores round of 16 – 05/07/2023 – Sport

The confrontation between Palmeiras and Atlético Mineiro is the one that draws the most attention in the draw for the round of 16 of the Libertadores, held this Wednesday (5), at the headquarters of Conmebol, in Luque, Paraguay.

It will be the only match between two Brazilians in the knockout stage of the main South American tournament. Flamengo will decide away from home against Olímpia-PAR and, if it passes, it can make a classic against Fluminense in the quarterfinals. The carioca tricolor will have Argentinos Juniors-ARG as a rival.

Athletico will have to go to an altitude of around 3,600 meters to face Bolívar in La Paz.

Before the Libertadores draw, the president of Conmebol, Alejandro Domínguez, protested against racism in football, but said that it is not the function of the governing body to punish clubs.

The final will be played on November 4, at Maracanã.

There was also this Wednesday the confrontations of the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. Seven Brazilians, among those who qualified as leaders of their groups or will play in the playoffs from the Libertadores, were present.

The confrontation that can be more complicated is that of São Paulo, who will decide at home, but awaits the winner of the dispute between Independiente Medellín-COL and San Lorenzo-ARG.

There is the possibility of a Brazilian dispute in the round of 16. This will happen if América-MG surpasses Colo-Colo. In this case, they will face Red Bull Bragantino. If they overcome Universitário-PER, Corinthians will face Newell’s Old Boys-ARG, deciding in Rosário.

The playoff clashes, between the third-placed teams in their groups and the runners-up in the Sudamericana keys, will face each other starting next week. The qualifiers go to the round of 16 to cross the path of the teams that won the groups in the first phase.
