The president of the National Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD), said that the creation of the position of senator for life for former presidents of the Republic, as well as the end of the reelection of the chief executive, could be discussed. At the same time, according to the parliamentarian, the position cannot be used to protect anyone.
“It cannot be a constitutional change aimed at solving problems or personal issues of president A or B. The idea can be conceived, discussed, I think it would even raise the quality of the discussion in the Federal Senate”, declared Pacheco, in an interview with Globo News on this Tuesday afternoon (31).
In the senator’s assessment, it is an honest and possible idea, but “it cannot be casuistry”. “It cannot be just for the purpose of establishing protection for a President A or President B,” he said. According to Pacheco, the discussion will still take a “good time” and has to be matured.
“Eventually this institute of the possibility of a lifetime senator and the very end of re-election being projected into the future”, he said. “But they are issues of improving the political order and everything that comes to the improvement of the legislature to improve the quality of the legislature, obviously we will be open to hearing without obviously closing the issue because it is a reflection and decision that generates many reflections and consequences.”
‘I will try to exhaust all negotiation possibilities’
Pacheco also stated in the same interview that he will maintain a “spirit of collaboration” with the government, stressing that the House “cannot be the stage for revanchism and retaliation against other Powers”. “We hope that the government will succeed”.
“My role is to seek to convince senators that continuity is needed. I will try to exhaust all negotiation possibilities”.
Despite this, the senator promised not to favor anyone if he manages to be re-elected. “Opposition and situation can be absolutely sure that they will have my full attention”. He compared it with his performance during the administration of former president Jair Bolsonaro, during which he said that the House asserted “independence”.
The Senate Presidency election takes place this Wednesday, February 1st. Pacheco said in the interview that he has “a good projection” for his re-election and claimed to have gained support from “the majority of senators, of the parties in the last two years”. The senator says he has a “commitment” with Parliament. “I never gave up defending the Legislative Power”.
