Pacheco defends that the re-election institute “was not good for the country”

The president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), stated this Monday (25) that he is against re-election to Executive positions. The senator argued that constitutional amendment No. 16, of 1997, which authorized re-election in the Executive, was not good for Brazil.
“I ask, the institute of re-election in the Executive branch: did it do Brazil any good? My perception is that it was not good for the country. When you are placed in the college of leaders, everyone tends to believe that the end of the re-election will be good for Brazil”, Pacheco told journalists during the Hemispheric Insurance Conference of the Inter-American Federation of Insurance Companies (Fides), held in Rio de Janeiro .
“That representative who has the opportunity to govern, sometimes fails to take the actions he should take, sometimes unpopular, sometimes unfriendly, depending on this criterion of re-election”, he pointed out.
The senator highlighted that he is “in no rush” to decide the vote on the mini-electoral reform. The text of the proposal was sent this Monday to the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Senate. For the changes foreseen in the project to take effect in next year’s election, the text needs to be sanctioned by October 6th.
