Otavio Frias Filho Chair discusses sustainable future – 12/11/2023 – Environment

The future of sustainable development and the global ecological and climate crises will be discussed at an event hosted by the Otavio Frias Filho Chair of Studies in Communication, Democracy and Diversity, a partnership between the IEA (Institute of Advanced Studies) at USP and the Sheet.
The lecture will take place this Tuesday (12), from 3pm to 5pm. The event will be online and there is no need to register in advance.
Sérgio Besserman Vianna, professor at PUC/RJ and president of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden Research Institute, will be the speaker. Suzana Herculano-Houzel, holder of the Chair and columnist for SheetAndré Chaves de Melo Silva, academic coordinator of the Chair, and Vinicius Mota, Editorial Secretary of the Sheet.
The chair was launched in February 2021, when the Sheet turned one hundred years old. The initiative pays homage to journalist Otavio Frias Filho (1957-2018), who led the modernization project launched by the newspaper in 1984 and ran the newsroom until his death.
The discussion must address how the need to abandon fossil fuels and the speed of degradation of nature demand profound transformations in civilization and human culture itself, dating back to moments such as the emergence of agricultural civilizations, Hellenism, the Renaissance and the Enlightenment.
