One study showed that people with six or more oral sex partners in their lifetime are 8.5 times more likely to develop oropharyngeal cancer than those who are not adept at the practice.

In recent years, there has been an increase in cases of throat or oropharyngeal cancer. The risk factors associated with throat cancer are smoking, excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages and, mainly, infection with HPV – the human papillomavirus, transmitted through oral sex.

Oropharyngeal cancer has already become more common than cervical cancer in countries like the US and UK.

According to GLOBOCAN, around 92,000 new cases of oropharyngeal cancer were estimated in the world in 2018, 74,000 in men and 18,000 in women, with about 51,000 deaths from the disease, 42,000 men and 9,000 women. .

“The prevailing theory is that most of us get HPV infections and are able to clear them completely. However, a small number of people cannot get rid of the infection, perhaps due to a defect in a specific aspect of the immune system. In these patients, the virus is able to replicate continuously and, over time, integrates into random positions in the host’s DNA, some of which can cause the host cells to become cancerous,” says Hisham Mehanna, a professor at the Institute of Cancer and Genomic Sciences at the University of Birmingham.

Experts advocate vaccination against HPV in girls and boys as a way to reduce the incidence of this disease. In Brazil, the HPV vaccine is offered free of charge to girls aged 9 to 15 years and to boys aged 11 to 15 years, in two doses with an interval of six months.
