Three weeks ago, a draft found in an assistant’s closet confirmed the existence of a coup conspiracy in Jair Bolsonaro’s anteroom. Now, the account of an allied congressman offers evidence that the former president was part of the plot at home.
The trap operation to annul the election and guarantee Bolsonaro’s permanence in office was described by Senator Marcos do Val. He said he was called in December for a meeting with the then president and received a request to record a conversation that would compromise Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
The parliamentarian claims that the plan was presented by former deputy Daniel Silveira, alongside Bolsonaro. According to Veja magazine, the idea was to use spying equipment borrowed by the Institutional Security Office to obtain evidence that Moraes had manipulated the election, thwart the vote and have the minister arrested.
Hours after the story broke, Marcos do Val tried to adjust his version of the story. First, he told the magazine that Bolsonaro himself presented the plot with the aim of preventing Lula from taking office. In interviews this Thursday morning (2), the senator stated that the then president only listened to Silveira’s suggestions.
Since coup machinations to reverse the election result began to be revealed, Bolsonaro allies argue that the talks surrounded the former president, but did not directly compromise him. It is difficult to sustain this line of defense with the information that these plans were made by so many close people, so often and even in his presence.
It was always known that there was a mission installed to prepare a coup and allow the then president to remain in power. The meeting reported by the senator will fuel the investigations that intend to clarify how Bolsonaro participated in these actions. The path to hold the former president accountable is getting shorter.
