Under a state of alert and concern after a shooting that killed three people in the city of Auckland, New Zealand, the opening ceremony of the Women’s World Cup took place without incident this Thursday (20) at the Eden Park stadium, in the New Zealand city.
Before the match between New Zealand and Norway, the Eden Park stadium hosted a celebration of the cultures originating from the two host cities of the World Cup: Australia and New Zealand. The lawn was taken over by a group of dancers who reproduced traditional choreographies from the indigenous cultures of both countries, the Australian aborigines and the New Zealand Maoris.
After the first show, a new group of dancers entered the scene representing the 32 teams competing in the tournament. It is the first time that this number of countries participate in the Women’s World Cup. Participants then opened fabrics in the center of the field that formed the World Cup logo.
The highlight of the ceremony was New Zealand singer Benee and Australian Mallrat singing the competition theme song, “Do It Again”. After the performance, fireworks took to the skies over Eden Park.
With the opening closed, it was time for the official tournament trophy to be presented to the world. The New Zealand and Norwegian teams entered the field but, before the anthems were played, a minute of silence was held in the stadium in respect of the victims of the shooting that occurred in the city of Auckland a few hours earlier.
According to information released by the local press, the attack took place near the hotel where the Norwegian national team is staying. In part of the statement, Fifa informs that it maintained constant contact with the teams of the opening match and continues to provide all the necessary support.
