Omar charges Minister Marina on a visit to Manaus: “No one has the right to deprive the Amazon”

Omar Aziz highlighted that Lula is committed to BR-319 and that dialogue is needed to align environmental issues

Senator Omar Aziz took advantage of the visit to Manaus by the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, in the ministerial delegation, to demand the reopening of the BR-319 highway, in a meeting held this Wednesday (04). In front of local authorities and mayors from the interior of the State, the senator emphasized his concern about the severe drought situation affecting Amazonas, reaffirming the need to seek long-term solutions to help riverside communities and remove Amazonians from isolation.

On his social networks, the senator from Amazonas spared no criticism of the current Minister of the Environment, Marina Siva.

“I spoke directly to Minister Marina Silva about the importance of recovering BR-319! At the meeting with ministers and political leaders from Amazonas, at the Amazonas Government headquarters, I spoke about the critical state we face. It is worrying that, despite advances in science and technology, we are still stuck in 20-year-old discourses that hinder the recovery of a road that already exists. My commitment is to defend the Amazon and, above all, the interests of our people, who suffer deeply from the impacts of drought and fires. We must sit down and discuss solutions for BR-319 and the people who live here. They are Brazilians and cannot be isolated at a time like this”,

declared the Senator.

Omar Aziz highlighted that President Lula is committed to BR-319 and that there needs to be dialogue to align environmental issues with the need for the highway in the region. The senator also highlighted the importance of help from the armed forces to serve the more than 6 thousand communities affected by the drought.

“We cannot simply admit the incompetence of not being able to inspect a highway. We make a lot of effort to preserve the Amazon, but no one has the right to leave Amazonas and Roraima in isolation, without BR-319. It’s great to use the Amazon brand in your speech, but it’s really difficult to live in the Amazon and take care of it,”

“Why is Brazil so incompetent, so incompetent, that it cannot monitor an open road? Will the fish die? The fish will die! Now, what about men? And the people of Amazonas? We make a huge effort to preserve the Amazon. I always did it as governor, Wilson Lima is doing it as governor, now, don’t deprive us, no one has the right to deprive Amazonas and Roraima of being isolated from the Brazilian Federation, no one has the right!”,

The delegation made up of representatives from the Ministries of the Environment, Indigenous Peoples, Integration, Ports and Airports, Mines and Energy and Defense arrived in Manaus in the morning and visited areas affected by the drought, such as the Port of the capital of Amazonas, where noted the historic decrease in the river level and its negative effects on the city.

Authorities also carried out a reconnaissance flight over critical areas close to Manaus, including a community in the rural area of ​​Iranduba. In a meeting with mayors of municipalities in Amazonas, where Governor Wilson Lima was also present, the federal government advanced some measures in response to the drought.

Among the initiatives announced is the carrying out of two dredging works, one on the Solimões River and the other on the Madeira River, with the aim of recovering the navigation capacity of the riverways. The first project will be eight kilometers long, lasting 30 days and costing R$38 million, while the second will be twelve kilometers long, lasting 45 days and costing R$100 million.

Another measure studied by the government is the release of defense insurance to fishermen who were harmed by the drought. Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change announced the sending of 191 firefighters to reinforce the local team that works to control fires, seeking to minimize the impacts caused by the drought.
