Senator from Amazonas says that reform is attractive for future investments in the country
With a favorable vote from Senator Omar Aziz (PSD), the Senate approved in the first round the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC 45/2019) that institutes a broad reform in the Brazilian tax system, this Wednesday (8). In the final score, the basic text of the Tax Reform was approved with 53 votes in favor and 24 votes against.
When delivering his vote in the plenary, Omar Aziz admitted that it is difficult to reach a consensus in a country with economic diversity like Brazil, also criticizing the senators who took the debate to a political rather than a technical bias. For Omar, the presidency of the Legislative House goes down in history with the PEC, reported by senator Eduardo Braga. The parliamentarian also took advantage of his vote to reinforce his commitment to the Free Zone and the development of logistical solutions to bring the Amazon region out of isolation.
“They want to impose on us that the Amazon is a vegetable storehouse, of forest. We do not have the right to be Brazilians, we are not allowed to build a 400 km road to make Amazonas part of Brazil. We have riches that we cannot exploit, minerals in large quantities, but Amazonians who are poor do not have this right. Maybe the reform is not the masterpiece we all wanted, but we did what could be done. Either Brazil moves forward with Tax Reform or remains demoralized by those who intend to invest here”, he highlighted.
After being considered by the Senate Constitution and Justice Committee, the PEC, now approved in the first round in the Plenary, transforms five taxes (ICMS, ISS, IPI, PIS and Cofins) into three: Tax on Goods and Services (IBS), Contribution on Goods and Services (CBS) and Selective Tax (IS). Each new tax will have a transition period.
