In a blunt statement in the Senate plenary, Senator Omar Aziz criticized Minister Marina Silva, contesting her position in relation to BR-319, contributing to the isolation of the states of Amazonas and Roraima. Omar highlighted the importance of debating road infrastructure in the region, refuting statements that he considered disrespectful.
The conflict began when Minister Marina Silva expressed her opinion that the desire of Amazonians to pave the BR-319 was just for “walking”. Omar vehemently refuted this simplistic view, arguing that infrastructure is essential for tackling serious challenges such as the pandemic and drought.
“It’s not for walking. It is often to take medicine, food, equipment, transport production from the Free Zone”,
emphasized the senator.
He highlighted the vital importance of these roads for transporting medical supplies, which could have guaranteed supply during the pandemic, and also for overcoming the difficulties caused by the drought in the region.
Furthermore, the senator highlighted the fundamental role of the population living in the region in preserving the Amazon. “We have always been the ones who have taken care of the Amazon, we are the ones who live there and protect the Amazon”highlighted Omar, opposing the idea that the minister, or any external authority, is solely responsible for environmental preservation in the region.
Finally, Omar criticized Marina Silva for using the “Amazônia brand” to belittle the local population, arguing that people are the true caretakers of the region. The clash in the Senate highlights the divergences regarding development and preservation in the Amazon, being a reflection of the complex political dynamics involving the region.
