The parliamentarian again mentioned the need for Brazil to establish a public security plan

Senator Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) participated in a session that discussed a bill that aims to include larceny against the elderly in the list of heinous crimes. During the discussion at the Senate Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ), this Wednesday (16), Omar highlighted the importance of combating crimes against the elderly, but criticized the increase in penalties and mass incarceration as the only answers to reduce crime.

Omar argued that it was necessary to adopt more effective measures to prevent and punish this type of crime, without imprisoning indiscriminately.

“It is not by filling the jails that we are going to solve the problem of public security. It is necessary to make programs that can solve it. Brazil has long owed a public safety program to Brazilians. I’m not talking about this Government, I’m talking about all those who have passed in the last 40 years, who did not have a decent program of prevention and repression in public security”

stressed the senator.

According to the parliamentarian, the issue is much deeper and requires structural changes in various spheres of justice.

“We are not talking here about a question of what the penalty is. The citizen who is seeing us at this moment in Brazil does not trust us. Why? The inquiry is poorly done at the police station, it reaches the court and is delayed, it takes forever to be judged. Today, judges and prosecutors are holding a remote hearing. The good citizen, the poor citizen, does not have access to the Judiciary. They receive a lawyer with a name, but they do not receive ordinary citizens”

added Umar.

The Senator stressed that it is indeed necessary to strengthen the protection networks for the elderly, training professionals from different areas to identify and report cases of violence and abuse, in addition to creating efficient mechanisms to prevent them from being victims of scammers. At the end of the discussion, the project was removed from the agenda of the session.
