The São Paulo section of the OAB (Brazilian Bar Association) created the Tereza de Benguela medal last Monday (25), with the aim of honoring black lawyers who contributed to the entity’s history.
The commendation is named after the leader of Quilombo do Quariterê, in the 18th century, located in the current state of Mato Grosso. Also known as Queen Tereza, she is a symbol of leadership for black women.
The medal will be distributed annually on July 25, International Day of Black Latin American and Caribbean Women.
The resolution that created the honor was proposed by the deputy general secretary of the São Paulo section, Dione Almeida, when she assumed the interim presidency of the OAB-SP.
“There are 251 subsections in the state of São Paulo where black women dedicate their time to advocacy, and they need to have this work recognized,” says Almeida.
