Nunes meets Father Júlio about homeless people and cries – 05/31/2023 – Panel

Father Júlio Lancellotti and the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), had a long and emotional meeting on the afternoon of last Monday (29) in which they sought to smooth over disputes regarding the treatment of the street population.

Nunes even cried when he said he suffered personal criticism on the subject and said he felt misunderstood.

The Cardinal Archbishop of São Paulo, Dom Odilo Scherer, and the secretaries Carlos Bezerra Jr. (Social Assistance) and Soninha Francine (Human Rights), in addition to Edson Ortega, Executive Secretary of the Government.

At the meeting, according to reports, Nunes cried a lot when commenting on criticisms that he considers personal that are made by Father Júlio on social networks. He said he understands political differences, but said that he suffers when he is called cruel or hygienist, and that he receives questions on the street about what the parish priest says.

The emedebista even asked the religious if he really considers everything that the municipal management does wrong in relation to the street population and asked the religious for help in the actions of his administration.

According to Father Júlio, the main theme of the conversation was compliance with decree 59.246/20, which deals with the relationship between municipal power and homeless people.

“We ask that the decree be respected and that there be integration between the secretariats. When we talk to the social assistance staff about the truculence of the GCM [Guarda Civil Municipal], they say they have no responsibility. But there is only one city hall,” he declared.

The decree has janitorial rules and protocols for dealing with people living on the streets. You cannot remove documents and medication, for example, or use unjustified force.

The religious also reinforced positions already expressed previously, such as reservations to the forced removal of tents during the day by the city hall.

Father Júlio, in particular, has been critical of this removal and also of the railing of Praça da Sé. He is often seen in the company of federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL-SP), who should be Nunes’ main opponent in next year’s election.

“I reassured the mayor that this situation will not change as long as people have no alternative other than to live on the streets,” he declared. According to the religious, the meeting was productive and helped to clear channels with Nunes.
