At least 94 players registered for this year’s Women’s Cup are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. The number is greater than any other tournament organized by Fifa and more than double that recorded in 2019, at the World Cup in France (38).
The survey was carried out by Outsports, a website founded in 1999 that gathers athletes who declared themselves gay, lesbian, bisexual or trans. The number takes into account only female athletes who publicly disclosed their sexual orientation.
The statistic represents about 13% of the players who will participate in this year’s World Cup, in Australia and New Zealand. The tournament started this Thursday (20) with 1-0 wins for the host countries.
The Australians defeated Ireland, and the New Zealanders passed the Norwegians.
According to the website, the research was based on reports published by the media and posts made by the athletes themselves on social networks.
For Cyd Zeigler, founder of the site and LGBTQIA+ activist, the growth reflects the greater acceptance within the modality.
“The greater presence of female athletes naturally creates an environment where women are more comfortable being themselves. It’s the same for North American basketball. The WNBA has nearly 25% of female players who are open about their sexual orientation,” he told NBC News.
